Shelly Beach / Sydney / New South Wales / Australia Wobbegong Shark There are 12 species of that carpet shark. They live in shallow tropical waters and its name comes from Australian Aboriginal Language and means "shaggy beard". Watching this video you will see why this name is very accurate. Their body is covered with symmetrical pattern which resembles carpet. Being ambush predators camouflage is very important, they hide in rocks and grass waiting for smaller fish to pass by. However this shark is not dangerous for humans it is better not bother it or touch as they can bite. Teeth are sharp and go thru wet suit. After the bite they tend to stick around being difficult to remove. So it is better to watch from far. Shelly Beach - how to get there Once in Sydney take a ferry from Circ...

Cruising about 30km off Sydney Australia a pod of Dolphins lead the crew aboard the sailing catamaran “Barefoot" to an awesome rarely seen feeding event. Captain and underwater cinematographer Dean Cropp was joined by marine scientist Vanessa Pirotta, Photographer Franziska Link and crewman Guy Saunders Originally we were on a mission to identify whales for Vanessa’s research, but the crew got well and truly sidetracked. Firstly 2 dolphins started riding the Barefoot’s bow wave, then there were 5, then 20 and then up to 30 dolphins cruising with us. It was spectacular. They started to lead us further to the east and out to sea and thats when we saw the action on the surface. Thousands of Yellowtail baitfish were being herded into a tight ball where the dolphins, seals and even birds began...

Major cities and crucial pieces of infrastructure, such as Sydney airport, could be underwater in just decades. A newly developed map made available on the website Coastal Risk Australia, based on data from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) in the US, shows places like Port Melbourne, Sydney’s Double Bay, the Gold Coast, Cairns and Byron Bay, are at risk of becoming uninhabitable in a matter of decades. In a new report, NOAA projected the global sea level to rise by two metres by the year 2100, if greenhouse gas emissions continue at current levels. Around 85 per cent of Australia’s population live near the coast. Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia. The most important places to visit in Sydney are: Sydney Opera House , Set on the Sydney harbor, Sydney Harbor Bridge (simply called "the bridge" by locals, courageous ones can even climb up the bridge), Bronte Beach (lesser known than Bondi, it is a beautiful beach, popular amongst families), Blue Mountains (an unspoiled mountain range filled with Eucalyptus trees. It is located 30 miles from Sydney, and there are plenty of hiking trails), Bondi Beach (Sydney's most famous beach, its lively promenade is as exciting as the beach) and many more. A great couple of dives at North Bondi in Dec. 2011. On these dives, we visited the Cathedral Cave, had the great pleasure to spot a Grey Nurse Shark (Carcharias taurus), were lucky to swim with huge schools of One-spot Puller (Chromis hypsilepis), Old Wives (Enoplosus armatus), Striped Catfish (Plotosus lineatus), and Eastern Pomfret (Schuettea scalaripinnis), etc... all of that in a calm sea with at least 15m viz... Thanks to Stephan for sharing these dives with me and for the lighting inside the Cathedral cave. I love diving in Sydney!!!

“The Sea & Me,” supported by Pew, documents established successes around Australia, places where world-class conservation and recreation have been working hand in hand. The film includes breathtaking footage of the extraordinary seas and marine life surrounding Australia and takes an in-depth and personal look at the inspiring people who look after our oceans. The movie also explores communities that have had marine sanctuaries for up to 20 years, places such as Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef, Tasmania’s Maria Island, and the Great Barrier Reef.
An early underwater documentary from 1960's on the marine food chain featuring Leonard Nimoy as narrator. Sea life documentary makers Ben and Eva Cropp film barracudas, sawfish, sea snakes, sharks, octopus to name a few. Everything from plankton to the predator of the sea - the shark, feature in this great example of early underwater documentaries.

Matthew Johnson-Roberson Assistant Professor, University of Michigan February 05, 2016 Abstract Robust, scalable Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms support the successful deployment of robots in many real-world applications. Robotic platforms now deliver vast amounts of sensor data from large unstructured environments. In attempting to process and interpret this data, the underwater domain poses many unique challenges. This talk will present recent advances in perception techniques for the generation of 3D reconstructions over tens of thousands of square meters. Topics will include the generation of self-consistent poses, long-term localization, consistency of lighting through an attenuating medium, the visualization of gigapixel textured models using a novel state-o...
