Here a video edited as gift for my previous Flatmate (2014). He arrived in Sydney without any apnea training. In three month, he went down to the 15m mark... Impressive. Good mate, good time. Hope you will enjoy as we did. This video may also be very interesting to people who wants to see the underwater life in Sydney and around. Each spot has its own life; dont hesitate to write a comment if you want to know where is the best place to find each species. Cruising about 30km off Sydney Australia a pod of Dolphins lead the crew aboard the sailing catamaran “Barefoot" to an awesome rarely seen feeding event. Captain and underwater cinematographer Dean Cropp was joined by marine scientist Vanessa Pirotta, Photographer Franziska Link and crewman Guy Saunders Originally we were on a mission to identify whales for Vanessa’s research, but the crew got well and truly sidetracked. Firstly 2 dolphins started riding the Barefoot’s bow wave, then there were 5, then 20 and then up to 30 dolphins cruising with us. It was spectacular. They started to lead us further to the east and out to sea and thats when we saw the action on the surface. Thousands of Yellowtail baitfish were being herded into a tight ball where the dolphins, seals and even birds began...
Some underwater, low-light and MTB footage with a GoPro Hero3 Black Edition. Shot in Full HD @ 60FPS (with the exception of the timelapses) in and around the Sydney region Edited in Premiere Pro CS5 without any grading, tweaks, repair or boosting. Pretty much just dumped the footage onto a timeline, cut it and added the music. Underwater Sydney locations; Gordons Bay (Rays!) Clovelly Beach (Gropers eating) Shelly Beach (Gropers) Bare Island (Octopus) And a little snorkel at Terrigal Boatramp (the Bull Ray). Yes I know... technically it's not really "Sydney" but at the expense of changing the video title for political correctness I decided to plead ignorance. Mountain footage was taken at Excelsior Reserve, Baulkham Hills. Low-light footage was taken around 4:40am in the Surry HIlls/S...

Shelly Beach / Sydney / New South Wales / Australia Wobbegong Shark There are 12 species of that carpet shark. They live in shallow tropical waters and its name comes from Australian Aboriginal Language and means "shaggy beard". Watching this video you will see why this name is very accurate. Their body is covered with symmetrical pattern which resembles carpet. Being ambush predators camouflage is very important, they hide in rocks and grass waiting for smaller fish to pass by. However this shark is not dangerous for humans it is better not bother it or touch as they can bite. Teeth are sharp and go thru wet suit. After the bite they tend to stick around being difficult to remove. So it is better to watch from far. Shelly Beach - how to get there Once in Sydney take a ferry from Circ...

Sydney's 1st hilarious attempt to go under water
One of the great engineering feats of modern Australia was the construction of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel. For more than 100 years, crossing Sydney Harbour via a tunnel had been just a dream. A tunnel had been suggested as early as 1885, when it was realised that ferries were perhaps not the most efficient way to get large numbers of people, carriages and horses across the harbour. When the Sydney Harbour Bridge was built in 1932, traffic was projected at 13,000 crossings per day. The sort of traffic the designers had in mind included "cars, horses and cattle, pigs and sheep". By 1986, the same number of cars was crossing the bridge in an hour. In 1979, Government called for alternative traffic solutions, including proposals for both bridges and tunnels. All proposals submitted involved the...

Those wild nights that ended in a toilet cubicle, the first strip club you entered, the five teapots of cocktails consumed at World Bar, the meat pie from a convenience store as you waited for hours for the first morning train. Savour them in your memory, it's time to say good bye to the king of debauchery, Kings Cross. You can only hold on to your 20s for so long, but fear not, grown Sydneysider, if history has taught us anything, the Cross will live again. Somehow, one day. There has been talk in recent years about the impending final farewell as the red lights turned off, the nightclub lights turned on and more recently, the streets became still and quiet after midnight. But we didn't want to believe it, Kings Cross, we shook our heads and took another shot. At the beginning of 2014, ...

Titanic The Exhibition tells the most recognizable story of maritime accomplishment and disaster through dramatic room recreations and 100-year-old artefacts. The exhibition features over 375 artefacts directly from the pre-sinking Titanic and her nearly identical sister ship, Olympic, thus providing a rare opportunity to view the grand Titanic as she was before falling to her watery grave. Select artefacts were removed from Titanic before she sailed to New York, others were donated by descendants of passengers, and many were taken from Titanic’s sister ship Olympic and serve as exact original replicas of items now lost on the bottom of the sea. Additional props and costumes from James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster movie “Titanic” are also featured. Music Credit: Titanic Motion Picture Soun...

Matthew Johnson-Roberson Assistant Professor, University of Michigan February 05, 2016 Abstract Robust, scalable Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms support the successful deployment of robots in many real-world applications. Robotic platforms now deliver vast amounts of sensor data from large unstructured environments. In attempting to process and interpret this data, the underwater domain poses many unique challenges. This talk will present recent advances in perception techniques for the generation of 3D reconstructions over tens of thousands of square meters. Topics will include the generation of self-consistent poses, long-term localization, consistency of lighting through an attenuating medium, the visualization of gigapixel textured models using a novel state-o...
